Grossular is a member of the Garnet group and is known for having the most varied colors, covering the entire spectrum with the exception of blue. Gem quality varieties (boasting a durable hardness of 7 on the Mohs hardness scale) include the rare emerald-green Tsavorite and the orange to orange-brown Hessonite. It is also very popular with collectors with its perfectly symmetrical crystals, especially in matrix. Interestingly, Grossular derives its name from its color resemblance to gooseberries, which are scientifically known as ribes grossularium. Who knew?? It often occurs in association with Diopside, Calcite, Vesuvianite, Epidote, Quartz and Prehnite to name a few.
The crystal system for Grossular is isometric, forming distinctive dodecahedral and trapezohedral crystals, often with striations. Other forms include dense crystal clusters, granular and massive.
Grossular Garnet is found throughout the world. Notable locations include Canada, Italy, Kenya, Mexico, Russia and the USA (Vermont).
