Fluorapatite is a member of the Apatite group, along with Chlorapatite and Hydroxylapatite. It is by far the most common and well known mineral of the group, to which the vast majority of fine crystals and collector specimens belong. One of the reasons for its popularity is its vast array of colors: colorless to white, green, blue, pink, yellow, brown, violet and purple. Add to the colors a variety of lusters including vitreous, sub-vitreous, resinous, waxy and greasy, and you have an amazing array of specimens. This colorful mineral is often associated and paired with Quartz, Muscovite, Calcite, Fluorite, Pyrite and Schorl to name a few.
The crystal system for Fluorapatite is hexagonal, commonly occurring as short to long hexagonal prisms. Other forms include thick tabular, columnar, granular to compact and massive.
Fluorapatite is a common mineral found throughout the world. Notable locations include Bolivia, Canada, Germany, Mexico, Peru, Tanzania and the USA ( Connecticut, New Jersey, Texas).
