One of the reasons Elbaite is the most well-know, colorful and valuable Tourmaline group member is Rubellite – the pink to red variety of Elbaite. In its gem quality form (transparent, no inclusions and characteristic color), it is one of the most popular and sought-after Tourmalines for collectors and the gem/jewelry trade. Its luster is vitreous to resinous and it has an extreme range of transparency from transparent to opaque. This amazing mineral has associations with numerous contrasting minerals including Lepidolite, Quartz, Albite, Muscovite and Microcline.
The crystal system and forms for Rubellite are the same as Elbaite.
Rubellite is found in limited localities, including Afghanistan, Brazil, Madagascar, Mozambique, Myanmar (Burma), and the USA (California, Connecticut).
