Stilbite with Apophyllite
A plate of colorless Apophyllite crystals hosting a few salmon-colored Stilbite crystals on a dark matrix can justifiably induce a yawn, but this one is different – it helps that the plate is very large, that the Apophyllite crystals are transparent and lustrous and that the focal Stilbite crystal is large and perfectly centered – but what really stands out is the luster. There really isn’t a recognized luster classification that clearly describes these Stilbites’ luster – they are all dusted with a colorless microcrystalline Apophyllite that reflects light in a most unusual and aesthetic way, more like a micro-sparkle. I could try to sound smart and call it a “variable micro-refractive luster,” but I’m afraid that “micro-sparkle,” as unacademic sounding as it is, is pretty darn accuarate! Anyways, the piece is beautiful and has amazing contrast, crystal formation, luster and balance! In excellent condition.
